Introduction Coding Assignment (Coding in Today’s Society)
Type of Activity
Research the various ways in which we interact with technology in society today, and investigate two uses with a bit more detail to understand the functionality.
Outcomes
- Discover the different ways in which we use technology today.
- Explain – in plain English – how you BELIEVE certain technology works in the background.
- Investigate two resources that specifically explain how that technology works.
- Explain what you learned!
Materials/Supplies
Chromebooks, internet access, Introductory slide deck (below), Assignment (below)
Activity
- Teacher will present an introductory slide deck to get students thinking about how technology works.
- Students and teacher will have a informal discussion about technology in today’s marketplace.
- Students will then investigate technology they use on a daily basis via an assignment and answer various questions.
- Questions to answer.
- What technology do you interact with on a daily basis?
- In your own words – without doing any research – explain how one of these technologies REALLY works?
- Research that technology citing two resources to specifically understand how it works.
- Explain the difference between your original thoughts and the “real” functionality of that techhnology.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated via their completion of the assignment above.
Privacy and Security Assignment (Reading)
Type of Activity
Read about and discuss various privacy and security articles, resulting in final assignment production
Outcomes
- Understand various attributes of digital privacy, including scams, passwords, privacy, and user agreements
- Produce a Smore assignment that addresses each of this attributes learned through reading and class discussion
Materials/Supplies
Chromebooks, internet access, access to various articles and a Smore Account
Activity
- Throughout the course of the unit, the instructor will discuss privacy and security topics. For this lesson, the students will have their choice of reading two of four possible articles:
- After students read two articles, they will be put into two discussion groups to review and discuss what they read.
- In addition to this reading and additional activities, students will eventually work on a Final SMORE Project Assignment.

- Why is it important to create strong password for your online accounts?
- What are things to look for in online scams or phishing?
- What are the things we should be looking for in online user agreements and Privacy agreements?
- Students will put together a Smore based on the questions above.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated using a rubric that addresses each of the main questions.
Career Introduction in Digital Literacy
Type of Activity
Research various career paths that exist in today’s society.
Outcomes
- Understand the difference between a job and a career.
- Assess current thoughts on future and future goals to ensure students are aware of path.
- Investigate two possible careers in various career clusters.
Materials/Supplies
Chromebooks, internet access, Google Slides presentation
Activity
- Teacher will present an introductory slide deck to get students thinking about various careers\
- Students will then fill out a survey that determines their likes/dislikes and then will be presented with various job clusters that fit their interests.
- Students will then investigate to top careers via an assignment and answer various questions.
- Questions to answer.
- What careers fit your personality and interest test?
- What are the educational requirements for this position?
- What skills are needed for this career?
- What are the daily tasks, activities and responsibilities of this job?
- What is the salary range for this position?
- Students will put together this information in the assignment template above and will be discussing with a peer (peer review) and turning in for a grade
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated via their peer evaluation and simple 10 point rubric for completion of work.
